Encryption
You will not send your account number or credit card number across the Internet in plain, readable text. As you enter the number from your keyboard as usual, its encrypted, or disguised, version will appear and be sent. The actual number will not be accessible. The open environment of the World Wide Web allows you to send and receive information as never before; encryption allows you to communicate sensitive information securely.
Another safeguard is authentication, which is proof of identity. A trusted third party, called a Certificate Authority, issues Security Certificates that verify the identity of both sides of a transaction or communication: the client (you) and the server (your bank). Authentication prevents someone from pretending to be you or your bank.
