SSL and HTTPS
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is best understood with a little background. Hypertext is simply text that contains links to other online documents. HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) connects the links, and connects the client (you) and the server (your bank). SSL is a nonproprietary, or open-systems, protocol layered under the HTTP that uses encryption, server authentication, and message integrity checks to provide secure communication over the Internet. Any contact between you and your bank's Web site is encrypted using SSL.
HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol, Secure) indicates that an HTTP address or URL uses SSL security.
