Eligibility
How does FirstMerit determine how much aid I am eligible for?
FirstMerit does not make that decision. Your school's financial aid office determines your eligibility for Federal loans using the information you provide on the FAFSA. You must complete the FAFSA to be considered for all types of Federal student aid.
How do I determine if I am eligible for federal student aid?
To be eligible for financial aid, you:
- Must be a US Citizen or eligible non-citizen
- Must be accepted for enrollment or taking classes at an accredited school as determined by the Secretary of Education.
(To find out if your institution is an eligible school, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4FED-AID)
- Must be classified at least half-time and be working toward a degree or certificate
- May not have an education loan that is in default
- Must be registered with the selective services, if eligible.
Other factors may apply. Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4FED-AID for more information.
I would like to apply as an "independent" student for my student loans. How could I change my status from dependant to independent on FAFSA?
You are considered a dependant student unless you meet on of the following criteria:
- You are 24 years of age on or before January 1st prior to the start of the academic year
- You are a graduate student
- You are married
- You have legal dependants
- You are an orphan or ward of the court
- You are veteran of the armed forces
- Other factors may apply; call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4FED-AID for more information.
What happens if my financial status changes after I have already filed my FAFSA?
Contact your school's financial aid office to make them aware of any changes that need to be made.
Is there a limit on the amount of money that I can borrow?
Your federal financial aid award has limits and is based on your status as an independent or dependant student as well as the grade level that you are considered to be in. Any other aid, in terms of grants and scholarships will also be considered in determining the amount you qualify for.
